Useful hints and advice from the experts

For anyone arranging a wedding in Sheffield

Select your wedding suppliers with care, look for qualified members of trade associations and experience, recommendations from friends are often a good starting point.

Friends:It is often tempting to try to save money and ask friends to help by borrowing a nice car or taking the photographs, not only is this risky, as their lack of experience and knowledge of how to cope with the unexpected, but it may also spoil their enjoyment of the day, due to their fear of letting you down!.

Cakes: There are a huge variety of cakes available, if you don't like traditional fruitcake why not go for a chocolate or vanilla sponge? Pillars may be of plaster, glass, metal  hoops or completely absent! Icing royal or fondant and an infinite variety of decorations are all available, find a baker who can create the cake you want.

Stationary:  There are many different styles of stationary, these days, have a look at plenty of examples, you can even use a carefully selected invitation to introduce the themes or colours of your wedding to your guest. Always double check all the details you provide to the printers, even make sure your venue is not about to have a name change.

Photography There are many different styles of wedding photography available these days, it‘s so important have a look round and find what suits you best. A mixture of relaxed groupings with casual informal shots are a good idea. The reportage or as they happen type of  photographs are all very well but if you don’t have a few casually arranged photographs as well you may have regrets, never seeing all your gown arranged nicely or every ones faces of the family. So select your photographer with care look for one who is flexible and you feel you can have a good rapport with as that’s the best starting point for great pictures.  Experience counts for a lot also, someone who works quickly and efficiently and is prepared for the unexpected.

Wedding albums themselves have changed a lot over the last couple of years, as well as the traditional the new book albums are wonderful. Each page in these can be individually designed with multi images or single shot pages making your album unique and personal. A studio which designs its own albums has to be preferable as you should be asked for your input in the album layout as well as being able to check the final proof before it is finished.

Cars:   Choose a company that is experienced in covering weddings and who has contingency plans if things go astray.  If you are selecting a vintage car make sure the interior is pleasant and clean and if you can, check it's reliability. If you live a good distance from the ceremony it may be better to have two cars  rather than one making separate trips, for you and your bridesmaids. Try climbing in out of the car before you make a booking, will there be enough space, especially if you are planning to have a big gown and train. Will the chauffeurs be smartly dressed Check what other commitments the vehicle you are choosing has got, you don't want to be rushed by the driver wanting to get to his next job. If you fancy a horse and carriage make sure you allow plenty of time for traveling. If you wish to stop at a park or scenic spot, you will need to discuss this and check whether there will be an additional charge.

Balloons: These are an increasingly popular way of decorating your wedding venue, filled with helium, floating over your tables, balloons will help co-ordinate the colours of your wedding. Try to choose an experienced  balloon decorator, ask them to show you examples of their work , if possible at your chosen venue. Balloon decoration is suitable for all weddings, particularly civil services, creating a romantic arch for you to stand under whilst exchanging your vows . At the reception balloons can be used to decorate the tables and the dance floor a huge balloon may be suspended to burst and shower the couple with tiny balloons and 'flutter confetti' as they take their first dance.

Flowers: Every bride’s wedding flowers are unique so it is important your flowers are designed especially for you and your wedding day. Only an experienced and skilled florist can guide you through the many options available, advising on every aspect from design styles and colour choice to catering for your budget.

Your wedding flowers are an integral part of your wedding day from the bride’s & bridesmaids’ bouquets to the ceremony and reception arrangements, the decoration for your wedding cake and even gifts and favours for your guests. Flowers are a unique way of enhancing all aspects of your special day.

It’s important that your flowers are perfect as they will be admired from every angle, almost as much as the bride & groom, and you may wish to keep them forever. To ensure that your wedding flowers are more than just a memory, why not have them preserved?

Video: When commissioning a film of your Wedding Day there are a number of things that you should expect from a professional video-maker - and also one or two that you shouldn't!

The video-maker is there to provide you with an invaluable and irreplaceable record of your day. Any video, even a badly made one, will be great to watch just after you return from honeymoon and everything is still fresh in your mind. But if it's badly produced then you will very soon realize and regret its shortcomings. The friends who were left out, the family members who you hardly caught a glimpse of. That look as you said "I Do", that fleeting kiss just after your vows. An experienced video-maker will do far more than simply 'point and shoot'. He (or she) will always try to catch those little moments that make all the difference and will work hard to ensure that every aspect of your Wedding is included in your video.

You should expect the video to 'flow' and to look natural. You should expect the video to tell the story of your day in an easy manner. In short, you should be able to sit back, relax and just enjoy watching it.

Choose your video-maker carefully and you will not be disappointed.
