IRIDOLOGY - A Diagnostic Technique

Like most herbalists, I use a variety of methods to diagnose patients' problems - the usual ones being the same as a GP would use, such as monitoring blood pressure, urine analysis etc., but also looking at the nails, skin and the tongue can tell me all sorts of stories! Iridology is another method to add to the list which, surprisingly, not many people know much about. Basically, it just means examination of the iris. It is a very effective diagnostic technique as not only does it reveal past and inherited disease patterns, but can point to weaknesses in the body which may lead to health problems in future.

Iridology started in the early 1800s, when a Hungarian boy, Ignatz von Peczely, inadvertently broke the leg of an owl when he caught it in his hand. As the owl and he stared at each other, he noticed a dark line rising in the owl's eye. He kept the bird as a pet and noticed the dark line disappearing as the leg healed. The boy then went on to study the reflex relationship between the iris and parts of the body (as in foot reflexology). Later, he became a physician and created the very first 'eye chart'. However, the pioneer work we rely on today is that of Dr. Bernard Jensen DC & Nutritionist of the USA.

Amazing as it may seem, the iris is a map of all body systems, mental and physical, which can be seen under a strong magnifying lens. An iridology analysis is completely non-invasive, and less tiring than an eye test. In one method the practitioner will ask you to stare at a fixed point while shining a torch into your eye from the side and holding a special magnifier up to your eye. Other methods use more sophisticated equipment, but the general principle is the same. Sometimes a digital photograph will be taken and the image transferred and enlarged onto a computer screen. This will allow the iridologist to scrutinize the iris for longer. He/she will be looking for dark markings, shadows, dots, lymph rings, nerve lines, white 'flares' and even colours, some of which can be seen with the naked eye. However, a little knowledge can be dangerous as it is not a simple science and proper training is essential.

You may have seen people with a white or dark ring round the edge of the iris, or an orange tinge radiating from the pupil, or little dark specks in the eye. These are signs of tissue weakness, mineral and nutritional deficiencies etc. in specific parts of the body, which can then be rectified with a change of diet or lifestyle and herbal medicine. The more chronic the problem, the longer it will take to treat.

There is now much more information available on this fascinating subject, and if you are interested, please feel free to contact me
