What does it mean to detox? Most people know that it is a method of getting rid of toxins that have built up in the system, especially after overindulging in rich food and drink over the festive season, or eating stodgy food during the winter.
Toxins are only waste products that have become toxic by their accumulation in tissues and organs such as the liver, and which the body has been unable to eliminate. Blood becomes sticky, leaving deposits of fat and cholesterol in the arteries and capillaries. Consequently, all parts of the body suffer from sluggish circulation, the digestion system is clogged and the first organ to outwardly show signs of this inner unease is the skin. The liver is the main 'factory' of the body where various stages of detoxification take place - so it makes sense to support its work
Ways of detoxifying are many and varied, but here are a few (I didn't say choose one. Do them all!):-

Diet - Fasting completely for one day - three if you're not
working. Drink only spring water and/or herb teas and take frequent
rest periods. A fast should be preceded and followed by a day
or eating only raw fruit and vegetables. Alternatively, a day
or two of eating only organic grapes (other grapes hold a lot
of pesticides) and drinks as above, will start you off on a detox
programme. Have plenty of crosswords, puzzles or reading matter
handy because boredom is a common complaint when fasting. Don't
do any heavy work.
Everyday Diet - Resolve to cut out all sweet food and drinks,
including concentrated fruit juice. Absolutely no alcohol, caffeinated
tea, coffee or fizzy drinks. Avoid salt, fried or fatty foods,
anything pre-packed or ready-made - e.g. sausages, smoked or cured
meats and fish, due to the additives present in these foods which
overload the liver. Try and keep to simple, home made foods with
plenty of wholegrains (bread, pasta, oats and brown rice, etc.)
80% of minerals and vitamins are lost in refining cereals into
the white kind. Lots and lots of fresh fruit and veg., organic
if possible. Two litres of water per day, taken at intervals.
Exercise - Walking or dancing every day - or even going up and down stairs for 10 minutes, providing your carpet can stand it! Will unclog your pipes and burn off the 'gudge' inside them. Exercise will also stimulate endorphins in your brain - those 'feel good factors', thus urging you on to continue with your keep fit programme.
Herbal Support - The old remedy of dandelion and burdock is a great blood cleanser. Nettle tea is restorative. For liver support choose from starflower (borage), milk thistle (Carduus marianum), and lymph cleansers, cleavers (Galium aparine), Echinacea, Blue Flag (Iris versicolor) and Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria). There are so many herbs to choose from , and none of the above will do any harm. BUT to get the most effective ones for your particular system, it's best to have professional advice, which may save you hours of time and money in the long run.
