His career in football began back in Wales began back in the late 1980's, when he was playing for his local amateur team Welshpool Town. He spent five years with the League of Wales team, whilst working full time as a steel erector. His break into professional football came in 1993, when Walsall General Manager Paul Taylor went to watch Welshpool to check out two other players, striker Frank Mottram and Wayne's brother Garry, a midfielder. However, he came away most impressed with Wayne in action at the time as a sweeper.

Evans went on to spend six years at the Bescot Stadium, and was very successful during his time there, making 229 appearances for the Saddlers, many of which were in Division Two.

One of Wayne's career highights was playing against his boyhood football team Manchester United in the FA Cup 4th round, Although Man Utd got through to the next round, it was a dream realised for Wayne to be playing at Old Trafford.

However, he had a final season plagued by injury and he was released in the Summer of 1999, and was quickly snapped up by Dale. He was one of Steve Parkin's first signings for the club, citing a desire to work with Parkin as one of his reasons for signing with the club.
