Something Seems to be missing here, and I'm not quite sure what it is. New Model Army, for all their vicious words and stomping rhythms, played a strangely empty set, lacking any real emotion or gut feeling.

They produce a fine noise by any account - their current musical edge is razor sharp. Stuart Morrow's basslines run through the set as a deep, twanging gurgle, and Rob Heaton's spot-on powerhouse drumming provides a thumping backdrop as commanding officer Justin delivers the Army manifesto.

If there is a political `message`, then it is one of common sense rather than left or right. Mentally, the Army are straight all down the line. But musically? From a set of mostly new material, only the few tracks aired from the band's classic `Vengeance` album set the pulse racing.

With a recent signing to EMI, let's hope this isn't the start of a big bland-out. Discontent in the ranks? It will be interesting to see where the Army is going to march to next.
