The Rev. Hammer 's first break as a singer was when he was still at school as Featus and the undertakers, then having the stage name of Featus he also did poetry. He then left this band and went on to form a duo with Grant Davidson stage name Bi Sickle.

Hammer & Sickle played a number of gigs and recorded two tracks on the "Buntingford Centre of the Universe" album with Justin Sullivan & Robb Heaton from N.M.A. under the alias of Crowman & Rokk Artthrobbe which came out in march 86, only 500 copies were pressed.

Not long after Hammer & Sickle split up and Rev. Hammer carried on his own for a while, then he joined up with Justin Sullivan and Joolz to form the Red Sky Coven, who performed poetry and acoustic music around the country.

In 1991 Rev. Hammer released his debut album "Industrial Sound & Magic" with the Levellers as the backing band and the next follow up album "Bishop of Buffalo".

In 1995 the Levellers album "Zeitgeist and Searchlights" featured "Maid of the river" written by the Rev.
