Kayak Race Training
Marathon distance race training takes place on the Macclesfield canal all year round on Sundays at 10.00 am, unless a Northwest Regional race is on that day.
There is a monthly Sunday morning club Hare and Hounds handicap race. This is a four mile race with competitors starting off at different times depending on their current handicap time - resulting in some exciting racing as all boats finish at the same time (in theory).
Other Training
The club offers a wide training program in many aspects of the sport, and at all levels, from beginner upwards.
Flat water coaching is held during summer month evenings on the canal at Bollington (Mondays) and on the lake at Brereton Country Park (Thursdays). Coaching is provided by the club’s qualified coaches and is aimed at levels from complete beginner to those aspiring to gain their BCU 1, 2 or 3-star awards.
The club also organises regular “introduction to moving water” trips in which club members who have mastered the basic skills on flat water are given the opportunity to be coached in moving water skills at locations including Matlock and Llangollen by the club’s more experienced coaches.
During the winter months, the club organises “Baths Sessions” at the swimming baths at Bollington. At these sessions, the club provides 1 on 1 coaching. The coaches will teach anything the student wishes, with everything on offer from “how to get into a boat” through to eskimo rolling and hand rolling (an eskimo roll without using the paddle!!)
The club also organises courses in many other aspects of the sport using outside coaches. Courses organised have included:
- BCU 4 and 5 star award
- Open Boating (introductory through to 2 and 3 star)
- Sea Kayaking
- Swift water rescue
- Water safety
- First Aid
- VHF Radio Operator
- Coaching (including Level 2 and 3 training; and Coaching Processes and Assesment)
