George and Geri - Profiles

George and Geri are very special cats that share our home and also just happen to be black! They are 100% black without a white whisker between them. You can appreciate their full gorgeousness from the attached photos. They had a troubled start in life, as they originate from London, where they were kept in terrible conditions. They shared a 1 bedroom flat with 33 other cats, and never left the building.

They were rescued by C.H.A.T (further details on website) and taken to the sanctuary in Broad Oak, East Sussex where we first met them. They have not been easy to get to know, and it has been a long process to get them to trust us, as they were very nervous when they first started living with us. However they now appear much more relaxed and contented, and enjoy the fact that they have access to woods and fields behind our house.

They spend most of their day exploring and hunting, whilst returning home for morsels of food and affection! They have lived with us for 3 years now, we believe they are about 5 years of age, and that they are brother and sister. They generally see eye to eye on most things, but they do have their differences (we can just about tell them apart now!) :-

George

George is a definite character - pushy, impatient but easy to love. He is the larger of the two cats, with a thicker tail, and a slight reddish tinge to his fur. He is named George after the witches cat in Simon and the Witch by Margaret Stuart Barry (a great children's book which was turned into a children's programme in the '80's) as this cat was also a grumpy, greedy black cat. I think the name suits him.

He is a good looking cat, vets have likened him to a seal or a panther, before he blots his copybook by getting vicious and being labelled a cat with "attitude". He is the most stay - at - home of the two and is more of a lap cat, he seems to have a particular liking for "Vets in Practice" and he also likes chasing the ball on televised snooker. He also tends to stick his tongue out when relaxed, which makes him look a little gormless, but he doesn't like being laughed at.

He recently made a nuisance of himself by getting in the next door neighbours catflap and getting trapped all night, eating all of the resident cats food, using the floor as a litter tray and generally frightening the house owner out of her wits by doing his "scary and hard" impression.

It's all a front really; he's just a beautiful cuddle kitten who'll do anything for a bit of Muller rice!

Geri

Geri has the dubious honour of being named after a certain ex-Spice girl, even though she is quite obviously black and not ginger! She is also a great believer in Girl Power as she is definitely boss where George is concerned. She spends a lot of time out on the tiles, is the better hunter and definitely knows how to put him in his place.

George follows Geri sycophantically and has the annoying habit of sitting right on top of her, which generally earns him a clip round the ear. Geri tries to get some peace and quiet by shaking George off and relaxing in some weird and wonderful places such as behind the drawers in the wardrobe.

She is still pretty nervous with people though, and dislikes sudden movements, loud noises or people walking past her when she is eating. She is quite a fussy eater and won't touch cat meat, but she loves tuna and ham. When Geri is with people she likes she "talks" to them and purrs loudly, being very affectionate - but she doesn't stick around for long.

Geri's speciality is staying outside in all weathers - including torrential rain - and then coming in and demanding a space on your lap.
