Priscilla came to England from
Nigeria with
the goal of the exhibition being to revive the Art of Tatting with
“Innovation
for the New Millennium”. Priscilla did not realise that there was
a world of tatters out here :-)))
She has taught tatting in isolation all over Nigeria with weeklong classes to groups of 50 Students... and they all tat by the end. :-)) You can see why Priscilla has been named the “Queen of Tatting” by the Nigerian Television. Front cover of Priscilla's book published in September 1987 after her series on Nigerian television. |

The results of Pricilla's
reasearch!!
:-))
She has called this new picot the “NIP” an acronym for Nigeria’s Ine-Orubite Picot”. On the left she has reworked well-known motifs from the last millennium & on the right she has livened them up for the New with NIP's. :-)) This is a picot that points down inside a ring and down on chains too. Making familiar motifs new & vibrant. She will be publishing a book hopefully this year. This she has developed for the world in celebration of the New Millennium. With her "scissors" in pink. I told her they look like hearts the other way up :-) |

The Gallery at the Africa Centre
The display covered many tables with mostly larger items of tablecloths, dressing table sets, doilies, chair backs and runners. Tatting is worn in Nigeria to decorate clothing, especially the head wraps and this could be seen on Priscilla’s wonderful outfit. Finished to a “T” with the Heart Motif that Mark Myers of Illinois USA designed for the Remembrance Heart Project, even wearing them as earrings to co-ordinate her outfit. There were also hats with motifs, collars and hand carved Nigerian shuttles. And a table full of examples of her student’s work. Eye candy all round :-)) |

The 'Welcome Table'. The
motifs came
from my online friends
Priscilla hadn’t met another tatter until Jean Johnson put her in contact with me. Little did she know about the international community with the “Ring of Tattters” and the Internet! I’m not sure who had the biggest culture shock when I presented her with over 500 motifs from the online tatting lists. Within three weeks they arrived from England, Germany, Holland, Sweden France and as far afield as India, Australia, New Zealand and from all over America!! Priscilla asks me to thank all of you
for being
soo kind & generous. :-)))
These were presented to guests as they arrived and the ones that were left have gone to Nigeria for Priscilla’s next venue. |
