Born in Wenchow, the family had moved to 48 Boone Road, Shanghai before his youngest brother was born in 1914. Within the next four years they had moved again, this time to 7 Carter Street, Shanghai - probably shortly after his father died.
William married Bertha Larsen who was born on 30/9/1911 in Buenos Aires, Argentina (although it is possible that she had Danish parentage). The obituary notice of William's mother had shown that "Elsie and Dick Larsen" had sent a wreath to the funeral, while "R Larsen" had been a pallbearer.
Their first three children were born in Shanghai, while the youngest (Patrick) was born in England.
Bertha died on 21/2/1968 at Wallasey, Cheshire. An address on a slip of paper (possibly written by his sister May), indicates that they lived at 15 Rudgrave Square.
