Nellie Winifred COMPTON

"Winnie" was born in China of British parents, although her grandmother was Chinese. In 1921 she married Charles Ellerton, who had stayed in China after sailing with the HMS Virago after the Great War. Their first child Robert was born (in Shanghai?), and in JaNellie in 1922nuary 1923 when expecting her second child she emigrated to Liverpool (Lancs) - her first time on English soil - following her husband who had left a month earlier to arrange accommodation in Lancashire.

They lived in the Liverpool area until around 1940, then moved temporarily to the "Fox Inn", Ysceifiog, Denbyshire (now Flint) for two years to escape the bombing during WW2, before returning to the family home.

An unsuccessful cateract operation around 1945 resulted in her losing the sight in one eye. In 1947, due to her husband's poor health they moved to Curland (near Taunton, Somerset), and latterly to Burlescombe (Devon).

The passport photograph above was taken circa 1922, prior to emigrating to England.
