At the time of the 1851 Census John was listed as living at
Tunstall. In 1861 he was shown as an apprentice draper
living at High Row, Richmond (his parents and siblings were living in East
Appleton. In 1871 he was a boarder at 84 Wilson Street, Middlesbrough,
the home of his sister Eleanor and her husband Thomas Roberton.
When his mother's Admons were granted in October 1876 John
was living at 7 Harris Street, Middlesbrough and married
Margaret Hunter the following year. The 1881/1901
Censuses show Margaret as being born c.1848 at Garmondsway/Durham
- but at nearby Trimdon/Durham in 1891.
At the time of the 1881 Census John (recorded by the enumerator as Elleston), his wife (33), son William (8 months), in-laws William (71, b. Penchar/Durham) and Elizabeth Hunter (73, b. Jarrow/Durham), and a servant, were resident at 44 Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.
Under the provisions of the Will of his grandfather Edward Ellerton the income from the latter's estate was divided equally between John and his siblings when the youngest of the family (Robert Charles) attained the age of 21 in December 1882.
By the time of the 1891 Census John had moved to 114 Union Street, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, where he lived with his wife, their three children, father-in-law William Hunter (now a widower), and a boarder - the 1890 Bulmer's Directory had recorded him as an "accountant's assistant" at this address.and Kelly's Directory also showed him living there.
Note: The London Gazette reported that "The Middlesbrough Ironopolis Football Company Ltd: At an EGM of the members held at the King's Head Hotel, Middlesbrough, on 21st December 1893, a resolution was passed that "the Company be wound up voluntrilay" [sic]. John Ellerton, Chairman".
The 1901 Census shows John with his wife and their three children still living at Middlesbrough, but now at 231 Linthorpe Road.
Kelly's NRY Trade Directories of 1909 and 1913 included a "John Ellerton, 3 [6 in 1913] Seaton Terrace, Linthorpe Rd, Middlesbrough". According to a newspaper obituary in October 1910 John attended the funeral of his youngest brother Robert Charles in Liverpool.
John died intestate and his estate was granted to his wife. His sons William and John were shown as sureties on the Letters of Admon. The National Probate Index shows: "John Ellerton, of 266 Seaton Terrace, Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, died 28th March 1914. Admons granted on 18th April 1914 to widow Margaret Ellerton. Effects £752" [net value £739].
His wife died at Redcar and her Probate Index shows: "Margaret Ellerton of The Green, Dormanstown, Redcar, Yks., widow, died 28/1/1927. Probate London on 23rd February to John George Ellerton works manager. Effects £1,002.".
