At the time of the 1851 Census Mary, known as "Polly" by her family, was living at Tunstall. After her father's death in 1865 her mother took her children to live at the "Sportsman's Arms" in Tunstall. They were still there at the time of the 1871 Census, but her mother later moved with them (including Mary Ann?) to Middlesbrough.
The 1881 Census showed Mary living with her husband Robert (a "railway engine driver", b. Darlington, 1848?) and children Ada and Joseph at 13 Pembroke Street, Middlesbrough.
The Will of her grandfather Edward Ellerton stated that the income from his estate was to be divided equally between Mary and her siblings when the youngest of the family (Robert Charles) attained the age of 21 in December 1882.
It is understood that, like her brother Thomas, Mary emigrated to Australia - possibly [per Dorothy Ritchie], on the P&O ship "Chusan" in or around 1884. The 1927 obituary of Thomas stated that she lived at Ascot, Brisbane.
