Possibly born at Tunstall where his parents were living at the time of the 1851 Census. In 1861 the family were living with William's grandparents in East Appleton: next to "Low Pasture House", and close to "Rudd Hall Farmhouse" - both of which were shown as uninhabited at the time of the census. After his father's death in 1865 his mother moved with the youngest children to "The Sportsman's Arms" at Tunstall. At the time of the 1871 Census William was shown living in Bakehouse Hill [next to the "Bull's Head"], St. Cuthbert, Darlington.
The 1881 Census shows William (26) as an "unmarried boarder" with Robert Burcher and his family at 25 Gerald Street, West Derby, Lancs. Both William and his landlord were described as "Commercial Clerk Timber", and presumably worked for the same employer. Under the provisions of the the Will of his grandfather Edward Ellerton the income from his estate was divided equally between William and his siblings when the youngest of the family (Robert Charles) attained the age of 21 in December 1882.
William was still living in West Derby at the 1891
Census, but was now a boarder at 64 Cotswold Street, the residence of Mary Royle
(and her children). He married Minnie Stones just 9 days after the census. William was a director[?] at Joseph Owens Timber Merchants when his
youngest brother Robert Charles
began work there as a cashier (having moved from County
Durham to Lancashire circa
1900).
Kelly's 1894 Directory of Liverpool listed William as
a "bookkeeper" living at 24 Kenmare Road, Toxteth Park, and Gore's
1900 Dir. of Liverpool showed him as a "cashier" at 16 Oakdake Road,
Waterloo. The 1901 Census recorded William and his
family still living at Oakdale Road.
William's will of September 1910 bequethed his estate and possessions to "my three children Edward, Eleanor Margaret, and John". Minnie had died in the previous year.
The National Probate Index records details of his Will as follows: "William Edward Ellerton of 16 Oakdale Road, Waterloo, Lancashire, secretary, died 5th June 1912. Probate on 7th August 1912 to Elizabeth Stones (spinster) [his wife's younger sister], and Harry Barnes Ingamells (merchant tailor). Effects £1409". [net value of £704]
** Note: A Sydney Thomas J. Ellerton (1896, Qtr.4) is listed in the FRC Births Index for Toxteth Park - not mentioned in the Will of William Edward, but could possibly have been a son who died young (the 1901 Census did not include him living with them).
