Thomas ELLERTON

Possibly born at Tunstall where his parents were living at the time of the 1851 Census. After his father's death in 1865 his mother moved with the children to "The Sportsman's Arms" at Tunstall. They were still there at the time of the 1871 Census, before moving (including Thomas?) to Middlesbrough.

At the 1881 Census Thomas was recorded as a 24-year-old unmarried boarder at 25 Elsdon Road, Coxlodge, Northumberland (head: Mary Rutherford). Under the provisions of the the Will of his grandfather Edward Ellerton the income from his estate was divided equally between Thomas and his siblings when the youngest of the family (Robert Charles) attained the age of 21 in December 1882.

Thomas emigrated to Australia around 1884, probably on one of the following vessels: 1) the Orient Line's "Liguria" via London and the Suez Canal, arriving in Melbourne(?) in November 1883, or 2) on the P&O ship "Chusan" in or around 1884.

He lived in Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook, NSW for "close on 40 years" according to an obituary notice (Sydney Morning Herald?). Another source shows that his home was called "Ellesmere" at Muscle Creek, Muswellbrook.

He was operated on for cancer, and presumably that was the cause of his death.  His 1927 obituaries also showed that he was a prominent member of the Primary Producers' Union, on the directorate of the Muswellbrook Dairy Co., and a founder member of (and a lieutenant in) the "G.Coy 4th Infantry Regiment" (disbanded c1918).

He was married to two daughters of Robert James Luscombe and Susanna[h] Catherine Street - his first wife Frances (b.4/12/1861) died on 17/1/1911, and he married her sister Edith (b.1869) later in the same year. Edith died on 16/12/1932 in Chatswood.
