George Christopher ELLERTON

Possibly born at Tunstall where his parents were living at the time of the 1851 Census. After his father's death in 1865 his mother moved with the youngest children to "The Sportsman's Arms" at Tunstall. They were still there at the time of the 1871 Census, before moving to Middlesbrough.

At the 1881 Census a "George E. Ellerton, 22, b. Catterick, Grocer" is recorded as an unmarried "visitor" living with John Pearson and his family (13 Harris Street, Middlesbrough). He later married their eldest daughter, Sarah. Despite the initial "E" in his name (transcription error?) and his age stated as 22 (rounded up?) all other facts appear to tie in.

Under the provisions of the the Will of his grandfather Edward Ellerton the income from his estate was divided equally between George and his siblings when the youngest of the family (Robert Charles) attained the age of 21 in December 1882.

No trace of the family in the 1891 census - surname possibly mis-spelt or transcribed incorrectly?

Kelly's 1893 Directory of North Riding listed George as an "insurance agent" at 23 Church Street, Middlesbrough. He was still living there at the time of the 1901 Census with his wife, children and 4 boarders (including 3 "professional footballers" from Scotland).

Their Probates show "GCE of 135 Kildare Street, Middlesbrough, died 28/8/1924. Probate to Sarah Ann Ellerton widow. Effects £423" and "SAE of 135 Kildare Street, Middlesbrough, widow, died 10/2/1939. Probate to Bertram Charles Ellerton [son] company director and Mabel Gertrude Thompson [daughter] wife of Thomas Thompson). Effects £399".
