There is no obvious record of John in either the 1841 or 1851 Census results.
The National Burial Index shows a John Ellerton, aged 48, buried on 7/2/1858 at St Anne's, Catterick - which, given that his parents were also buried there, seems a likely match (although he is not shown in the Catterick MI's whereas his parents and brother Edward are!).
John is not mentioned in his father's 1868 will, adding credence to the probability that he had already died by this time.
