The 1841 Census showed that he was no longer living with his parents/siblings, and it seems likely that he had already moved down to London as he married London-born (Hanover Square, St Georges) Elizabeth Kitching in Kensington in 1848. In 1851 they are listed at 8 Edward Street, Newington, Surrey, along with a servant. The 1861 Census showed him living with wife, mother in law, niece and nephew (Louisa and Sidney Gooch), and two servants at 12 Provost Road, Hampstead.
No obvious trace of him in the April 1871 census, but when his father's will was proved just 19 days later William (described as a "merchant") was stated as living at 13 Addle Street, Wood Street, City of London. Collingridge's 1871 City of London Directory (relating to the textile industry) shows him at 13 Addle Street, Cripplegate, and his trade as "hose manufr".
William's Probate shows: "...of 14 Queens Road, Browns Wood Park [East Grinstead?], Middx. and of 37 Aldermanbury, City of London. Hosiery manufacturer, died 6/5/1880. Will proved on 15th June by Elizabeth Jane Ellerton, widow. Personal Estate <£3,000".
The 1881 census shows Elizabeth (widow, aged 63, b. St Georges, Hanover Sqr., annuitant) still living at 14 Queens Road, Hornsey, Middx. with a domestic servant. Her Probate shows: "EJE of 32 Sunnyside Road, Ealing, Middx. Widow, died 3/2/1891 [aged 73 per GRO Index/Q3, Brentford]. Admons to Charlotte Mary Taylor [nee Kitching?], sister and one of next-of-kin. Personal Estate £439".
The hosiery business appears to have stayed "in the family" after William's death, as the 1881 edition of Collingridge's City of London Directory included an "Ellerton & Gooch, hose agnt", at 37 Aldermanbury, Cripplegate; while editions of the Post Office London Directory show Ellerton & Gooch trading at 80 Coleman Street, EC (1882 - revealing that the latter referred to "Sidney Gooch, wholesale hosier" and 1884), 51 Milton Street EC (1891 "Hosiery Manufacturers", and 1895 "Manufg. clothiers and outfitters"), 5&6 Fore Street, EC (1899 "manufacturer of fancy hosiery, caps, and infants' millinery"), and 68 Basinghall Street, EC (1910, 1914, 1915).
Kelly's 1913 Directory of Surrey showed "Richard Ellerton Gooch, Yermatt [Zermatt?], Bingham Road, Croydon", and a Sidney Gooch (his father?) was living at The Limes, Havelock Road, Croydon..
