Jane ELLERTON

Jane is shown in the 1841 Census as living with her parents and siblings at East Appleton [Rudd Hall farm?]. The 1851 Census records her in Melsonby with her aunt Elizabeth Bussey (nee Ellerton), and sister Mary at "Laton Moor House".

Jane married John Cradock in 1856 and they were recorded living in Preston-under-Scar at the time of the baptisms of their first two children, with John shown as being a "school master". The 1861 Census for Hudswell lists John Cradock (32, schoolmaster, b. Redmire), Jane (33, Appleton), Mary Eleanor (4, Preston), and Emily Isabel (7m, Scorton).

The 1871 Census shows John living in Preston with his father Tobias, while Jane (43; head; hospital matron) and Emily were now living in Richmond.

The 1881 Census shows "Jane Cradock, head, widow, 50, independant, East Appleton" living at Castle Hill, Richmond with a male lodger.

Facts relating to their children:
Mary Eleanor Craddock.- baptised as Jane Ellen(!) on 27.8.1856 at Wensley (IGI and Wensley PR's), only 3 months after her parents were married!  She married either Jonathan Bland or Edward Hird in 1882/Q2 at Reeth (not found in either the 1881 or 1891 Censuses *).

John Ellerton Craddock.- the GRO indexes for Leyburn [2 miles east of Preston-under-Scar] record his birth in the 3rd Qtr of 1858 (Cradock); baptised 18.9.1858 at Wensley per the PR's (19.9.1858 per IGI); died in 1859 (2nd Qtr.) at Richmond per GRO.

Emily Isabel Cradock - probably born at Scorton in Sept/Oct 1860 as she was shown as being 7 months old at the time of the 1861 census. She married Daniel Raw Summerbell at Reeth in 1881/Q1. (not found in either the 1881 or 1891 Censuses *).

* I am indebted to Larraine Williams (related to Tobias/John Cradock) for much of the above information. she has an interesting theory that Mary and Emily may have emigrated with their husbands soon after marrying ...
