Margaret SCOTT

At the time of her marriage in 1844 Margaret was living in Tunstall. One of the witnesses on her marriage certificate was Martha Scott, presumably her sister or sister-in-law.

The 1851 Census for Tunstall (near Catterick) shows Margaret living with her husband and daughter Mary Ann. Her own parents are listed as living in an adjacent building with their grandson John Ellerton, while her husband's parents had grand-daughter Eleanor Elizabeth living with them in nearby Appleton.

In 1861 the family (with the exception of John) were living with Edward's parents in East Appleton: next to "Low Pasture House", and close to "Rudd Hall Farmhouse" - both of which were shown as uninhabited at the time of the census.

The March 1865 will of her husband bequethed Margaret all of his goods and possessions. Under the terms of the Will of her father-in-law Edward Ellerton (proved in April 1871) the income from his estate was invested and "applied towards the support and maintenance of my daughter in law Margaret Ellerton and her family..." (click here for a transcription of the will)

Some time between the deaths of her husband and father-in-law Margaret had moved to "The Sportsman's Arms" at Tunstall (per the 1871 Census), and later moved to Middlesbrough with her youngest children, as she felt that there would be more opportunities for them there.

She died intestate, and the National Probate Index records details of her Admons as follows: "Margaret Ellerton, late of Middlesbrough, widow died 7th September 1876 at Harley Hill Farm, near Richmond. Admons granted on 3rd October 1876 to John Ellerton of 7 Harris Street, Middlesbrough, iron manufacturer's clerk, son and one of the next of kin. Effects under £70". According to Dorothy Ritchie, Margaret's great-granddaughter (Maud, Dorothy's mother) spent "many happy hours" at Harley Hill Farm, a "comfortable stone-built building" on the outskirts of Catterick Garrison farmed by the Metcalfe family since 1945.

Sureties shown in her Admons were George Toogood (Cannon Hotel, Cannon Street, Middlesbrough - innkeeper) and John Charles Sills (Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough - merchant tailor).

Margaret shares a grave with her husband and his parents. The headstone has been moved to the south boundary wall of St.Anne's Churchyard in Catterick (click here for a photograph of the church), and the inscription reads:

"In memory of Edward Ellerton of Tunstall late of Appleton who died October 16th 1870 aged 86 years. Also Mary his wife who died June 12th 1863 aged 75 years. Also Edward their son who died Apr 2nd 1865 aged 52 years. Also Margaret his wife who died September 7th 1876 aged 58 years."

My thanks to Dirk Jameson who has provided an excellent colour photo of the headstone (taken in March 2001) showing clearly the above epitaph.
