John ELLERTON

His father's will (February 1802) allowed for property in "Bellerby or elsewhere" to be divided equally between John and his brothers (David and Edward) as soon as the latter reached 21.

The Hurworth All Saints PR's include an entry on 15/8/1816 referring to "Christopher Hird of Darlington, grocer, and John Ellerton of Darlington, gentleman .... Bond of £50 to maintain bastard child of Sarah Saville of Hurworth [2m south of Darlington]".

The records of solicitors Hanby Holmes include a 2/9/1828 "copy draft bargain and sale" by Thomas Bowes and R M Dinsdale to John Ellerton of Darlington, gentleman, and Thomas Bussey [JE's brother-in-law] of Melsonby, yeoman, of the tithes of land at Cockerton and covenant to surrender such copyhold lands there to James Moate and Mary, his wife .... Consideration: £1190 for the copyholds and £140 for the freehold tithes by Mary Moate to Bowes/Dinsdale. [Durham Record Office, ref. D/HH 2/8/469].

At the time of the 1841 census John (66, law clerk) and his wife Dorothy (63) were listed as living in "Part of the township of Darlington".  The 1851 census records John (76, retired solicitor's clerk, b. Melsonby) & Dorothy (73, city of Durham) at Arden street, Darlington.

According to a letter written by his youngest brother Edward in 1857, John was then "in his 83rd year", but it appears that he died soon afterwards, as the National Burial Index shows a John Ellerton, aged 83, buried on 8/8/1858 at St. Anne's, Catterick (GRO Index Q3, Richmond), as were several other close relations.  John's 1857 will was proved by Dorothy, both shown as living in Topcliffe (5m SSW of Thirsk).
