Edward ELLERTON

His father's will (February 1802) allowed for property in "Bellerby or elsewhere" to be divided equally between Edward and his brothers (John and David) as soon as he reached 21. The 1807 "Poll for Knights of the Shire" recorded Edward as a voter residing in Uckerby (3m east of Richmond) with freehold property in Bellerby.

"White's Directory of Trades and Professions" for 1840 includes Edward Ellerton, a farmer, living in East Appleton [Rudd Hall?]. He was also recorded there at the 1841 Census along with his wife, children (Edward, Eleanor and Jane), and three servants/employees - shown as being the only inhabitants of "East Appleton", and listed immediately after "Rud Hall", it seems likely that their abode was what later became known as "Rudd Hall Farm".

The 1851 Census showed Edward (66) living at "E. Appleton Farm", with his wife and grand-daughter Eleanor Elizabeth - "farmer of 240 acres, employing 6 labourers". His son Edward was shown in the census of nearby Tunstall as a "farmer, co-partner of 240 acres".

In 1857 Edward wrote a long letter to his nephew John (of Aberford) giving extensive details of many of his ancestors, including John (b.circa 1630). At the 1861 Census he was shown as a "Farmer of 240 acres, employing 1 labourer" at East Appleton, along with his son Edward (1813-1865) who was described as a "Farmer - joint tenant".

The inscription on his grave (see below) indicates that he was no longer a resident of Rudd Hall Farm when he died in 1870. This was quite likely, as when Edward Jnr. died in 1865 (with his widow and children subsequently moving away from the farm) Edward Snr. was already 81 and would have been unlikely to have continued working on the farm alone. Based on the above information it seems probable therefore that the Ellerton family were tenants of Rudd Hall Farm between c.1840 and 1865.

The National Probate Index records details of his Will (click here for a full transcription) as follows: "Edward Ellerton, late of Tunstall, Catterick, Gentleman who died 16th October 1870. Proved on 21st April 1871 by William Ellerton of 13 Addle Street, Wood Street, City of London, merchant, son and one of the Executors. Effects under £600".

Edward shares a grave with his wife, son Edward, and daughter-in-law. The headstone has been moved to the south boundary wall of St.Anne's Churchyard in Catterick. Click here for a photograph of the church, and here for an excellent photo of the headstone taken in March 2001 by Dirk Jameson - showing clearly the following inscription:

"In memory of Edward Ellerton of Tunstall late of Appleton who died October 16th 1870 aged 86 years. Also Mary his wife who died June 12th 1863 aged 75 years. Also Edward their son who died April 2nd 1865 aged 52 years. Also Margaret his wife who died September 7th 1876 aged 58 years".
