Mary HUTCHINSON

Born in Durham, but she had presumably moved to the Catterick area by the time of her marriage in 1807. At the 1841 Census she was living with her husband, children (Edward, Eleanor and Jane), and three servants/employees in "East Appleton". Interestingly John (80), Margaret (80), and Margaret (20 - their granddaughter?) Hutchinson are shown living at nearby Bell Mount. A William (40) and Jane (70) Hutchinson are also shown living at West Appleton....

The 1851 Census showed Mary (63) still living at Appleton [Rudd Hall?] with her husband and grand-daughter Eleanor Elizabeth.

Mary shares a grave with her husband, son Edward, and daughter-in-law. The headstone has been moved to the south boundary wall of St.Anne's Churchyard in Catterick (click here for a photograph of the church), and the inscription reads:

"In memory of Edward Ellerton of Tunstall late of Appleton who died October 16th 1870 aged 86 years. Also Mary his wife who died June 12th 1863 aged 75 years. Also Edward their son who died April 2nd 1865 aged 52 years. Also Margaret his wife who died September 7th 1876 aged 58 years".

My thanks to Dirk Jameson who has provided an excellent colour photo of the headstone (taken in March 2001) showing clearly the above epitaph.

Was Mary related to the Robert Hutchinson who married her daughter Mary in 1852??
