Frederick Cecil ELLERTON

Known as "Cecil", he was educated at Merchant Taylors School and subsequently joined the London County and Westminster Bank. In 1915 he moved to the foreign department of Barclays Bank - appointed as Exchange Manager in 1926, manager of Liverpool Foreign Branch in 1929, General Manager in 1942, and then Deputy Chairman in 1951. He retired in 1958 but retained his seat on the Board.

The passenger manifest of the "Adriatic" showed that in 1920 he visited New York for 9 weeks on business for his employers (Barclays?) - he was described as 5'11", fresh complexion, black hair, grey eyes, mole on left cheek, and his nearest relative: "Mrs Ellerton, Bank House, Preston Street, Faversham, Kent". Canada to USA boarder crossing records recorded him as travelling on the Empress of Britain and a visitor to Niagara Falls and New York in October 1932.  In 1939 he was recorded as living at 14 Bancroft Avenue, London, on his son's Canada-USA boarder crossing manifest.

He was the President of the Institute of Bankers from 1950-1952 and was knighted in 1952 for "financial services". His place of residence was shown as Oriel Lodge, Burkes Road, Beaconsfield, Bucks. in both the 1958 and 1963 editions of Kelly's Handbook to the Titled, Landed and Official Classes. According to the latter he married Lady Dorothy Catherine Green, daughter of William John Green of Muswell Hill [Walthamstow].
