Montague ELLERTON

Montague was shown in the 1901 Census living with his brother Herbert at Hampstead, London as a "Brokers Clerk", aged 20 (indicating a year of birth as 1880/81).

According to his son Deryk's school admission register, in 1939 Montague was living at 127 Takenouye, Negishi, Yokohama. On 24th November 1942 The Canberra Times reported that "Civil Internees released on exchange" from Japan and arriving in Sydney included "Mr and Mrs Montague Ellerton who were with the Australian Legation in Tokyo, Mr Ellerton's sister, Mrs Marshall, and Mrs J L Clements who lived for 30 years in Shanghai".

His Record of Service (sourced via www.naa.gov.au) recorded his mobilisation for service in March 1943 with the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve as "Paymaster Lieut. (Op) ... Special qualification - Secretary, Interpreter of Japanese. Service to which allocated on Mobilisation - Rushcutter addl. Moreton addl. (ATIS)". He was also described as being 5'9½", with brown hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. His appointment was terminated in November 1945, after which he took up Consular duties in Yokohama.

Known details of their children:

Montague David - b.1/3/1919* in Kobe. In 1942 he married Judith Jean Paterson in Burwood, Australia (per NSW Registry). He graduated at the Richmond Flying school, NSW, and was a Flying Officer in the RAAF (75th Squadron) in WW2 - he died on 27/4/1942 when his Kittyhawk plane crashed on landing near Cooktown, Queensland - see below. In September 2001 Tim Ellerton, a nephew of Montague, with the help and approval of the local Cook Shire Council, named the place where his uncle died so tragically "Ellerton Beach" and erected a sign in his honour. Tim's detailed account of the accident can be found at http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/27apr42.htm and commemorative data on the Commonwealth War Graves site.

Patricia Mary - b.1921 (Kobe?). According to the National Archives of Australia she and her brother Deryk attended school at Adelaide, Australia, and they left Melbourne together on the s.s. Nellore in December 1937 to "return to their parents .... of 127 Takinouye, Nagishi, Yokohama, Japan". Married Sir (later Lord) Paul Henry Gore-Booth in Japan in 1940, interned after Pearl Harbour, and later had 4 children - David Alwyn (b.1943 in Washington D.C.; d. in London 2004) and his twin Christopher Hugh, Celia Mary, and Joanna Rosamond. According to a lengthy 1984 obituary in The Times, the Gore-Booths were "a great success in India"

Deryk Maxwell - b.20/4/1924* in Kobe. He probably spent much of his childhood in Australia, but returned to Japan (see details for Patricia, above) in Dec.1937. He attended Adelaide High School before enrolling at the Yanco Agricultural High School, Adelaide, in 1939 (an aunt's name was shown on his enrolment form: Mrs Treloar, 47 Emilie Street, Sefton Park, Adelaide - presumably where he lived at the time?). He enlisted for service in WW2 at Sydney in 1943 - Royal Australian Naval Reserve (H.M.A.S. Cerberus N.E.S.). He was described as being 5'11" tall with fair hair and blue eyes. Married Jean Florence Martin in Woollahra, NSW, Australia in 1947 (per the NSW Registry). Died in 1993.

Anthony Colin - b.27/11/1927* (but shown as 30/9/1927 on the NAA website) in Kobe. Enlisted for service in WW2 at Sydney.
