George Mouat Keith ELLERTON

George entered St John's College Oxford in May 1836. Various announcements in The Times showed that George was a scholar at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was awarded a B.A.degree in 1840; he was ordained at Salisbury as a Priest of Oxford in 1842 (four months after his first marriage); obtained an M.A. degree in 1843; appointed to the curacy of Milton Clevedon, Somerset - 2 miles from Bruton - in 1844 (as listed in Hunt's 1851 Directory of Dorset), to St John's, Bethnal Green in 1864, and St Simon Zelotes, Bethnal Green in 1867.

George's first wife Elizabeth was the third daughter of John Crouch of Bruton, Somerset (per The Times). She died young in 1856 (GRO Index Q2, Wincanton; b.1820 per the NBI), but it was not until 1879 that George remarried. A short notice in The Times on 9/6/1863 (q.v.) presumably related to papers belonging to Elizabeth, and the 10/1/1868 issue reported that George conducted the marriage ceremony of his brother John.

The 1861 census shows him as "Curate of All Saints, Northampton", living with his daughter Dora and son Mouat in York Parade, Stony Stratford, Northants,

George was the rector of St. Michael's Church at Smethcote (9 miles SW of Shrewsbury) from 1870-1895. The Smethcote Registers record him as "George Mouat Keith Ellerton, M.A., Brasenose Coll.. Oxon.". He is shown in the 1871 Census at Smethcote Rectory with his daughter Dora and two servants. A notice in the Leeds Mercury announced the marriage "at Lindley, Huddersfield, Catherine, second daughter of the late Pierre Sangrouber Esq. of Lausanne to the Rev. GMKE, Rector of Smethcott, Salop" in October 1879.

, at the 1881 Census at "The Vicarage, Smethcott, Shropshire", with his second wife Catherine (51, b.Westminster) and two servants, and the 1891 Census at Smethcote with Catherine (b. Middlesex), Dora, and two servants.

Catherine (1826-1918) was the daughter of Pierre Sangrouber (1789-1862; born in Yverdon, Switzerland) and Margaret Oswato, and the sister of Charlotte who married George's brother Frederick. Both sisters are thought to have been born in Soho. London.

His 1898 Probate showed: "Rev. George Mouat Keith Ellerton of 4 Lexden Gardens, Shrewsbury. Clerk, died 30/9/1898. Probate on 14th November to Mouat Keith Ellerton (architect) and Dora Grace Ellerton (spinster). Effects £96."

The 1901 Census for Leamington Priors/Warwickshire included "Catherine Ellerton, 71, b. Loho [Soho?]/London, "Living on Own Means"), and the 1919 Probate index reveals: "Catherine Ellerton of 26 Beauchamp Avenue, Leamington. Widow, died 28/12/1918. Probate on 5th March to Frederick George Ellerton, [nephew] bank manager. Effects £2,213."

Brief details of his children:

Dora Grace - b.1850 (per GRO Index Q3, Wincanton, Somerset) - Bruton/Somerset, per the 1871/1891 Census'. In 1891 she was shown as "single" living with her parents at Smethcote (Shropshire). The 1901 Census for Leamington Priors/Warwickshire, shows Dora ("born Bruton, Living on Own Means") living in the same household in Leamington as her uncle John Ellerton and his family. Her Probate shows "Dora Grace Ellerton of 41 Regent Grove, Holly Walk, Leamington, spinster, died on 29/2/1936 at 91 Union Road, Warwick. Probate to Eric Leslie Webber bank manager. Effects £318".
