Presumably named after his grandfather's employer Charles Grant. The portrait of Frederick below was probably painted circa 1835 while he was still living in India.
A notice of his 1851 marriage "at Huddersfield ... to Henrietta Hudson, second daughter of William Heise Esq, MD of Dublin" appeared in several newspapers including the Morning Chronicle (London).
The 1861 Census for Tadcaster West showed Frederick living in Bridge Street with his wife Henrietta (shown as aged 38) and son. In 1871 they were still in Tadcaster West, but now shown as living between the High Street and the "George & Dragon" with a "Dorinda Heise Ange, 17, niece/visitor, unmarried, United States New York" (and Henrietta's age was now recorded as 53!).
Kelly's Directory of 1881 showed him living as a "Medical Officer" for the Lindley district of Huddersfield, and at the 1881 Census he was living at "Arlington St, Lindley House, Lillington, Warwick[shire]" with his second wife Charlotte (48), and four female servants/attendants.
Charlotte (1833-1917) was the daughter of Pierre Sangrouber (1789-1862; born in Yverdon, Switzerland) and Margaret Oswato, and the sister of Catherine who married Frederick's brother George. Both sisters were thought to have been born in Soho. London, although the 1901 census showed that Charlotte was "born Switzerland, British Subject".
Kelly's 1896 Directory of Warwickshire recorded him as "MRCS, Eng, retired", still living at "Lindley ho., Lillington Avenue" Frederick and Charlotte were still living at Lillington in 1901
according to that year's Census return. Deacon's 1902
Court Guide of Warwickshire listed him as "1859 [year of registration],
M.R.C.S. Eng., L.R.C.P. Edin., L.S.A. Lond. (retired), Lindley House,
Lillington Avenue, Leamington Spa". |

Frederick is credited with compiling (or commissioning) the family chronicle "Ellerton of Ellerton of Swaledale", a copy (or the original) of which appears to have been passed to his nephew Henry Howard in 1907.
