John was reputedly a Judge in India and a member of the Honourable East India Company. His wife was the daughter of Sir George Mouat Keith, bart, R.N. (per the 1857 Letter), and Catherine "Kitty" Howard (half-sister of the author of the Jackson Diary).
Until 1833 intended visitors to India were obliged to obtain authority from the East India Company and to deposit a Bond, usually at £200 per person. A Bond of £600 was deposited in June 1826 for "Mrs Margaret Ellerton, Miss Margaret Ellerton, and Miss Elizabeth Ellerton ... passengers ... sureties William Essex and John Dyster"
According to the document Ellerton of Ellerton of Swaledale John was shipwrecked off the coast of Madras with his wife and youngest son, and died shortly afterwards in October 1833. It seems likely that his wife and children returned to England soon afterwards, and according to the Jackson Diary Elizabeth was married in 1845 "at her mothers" [Kensington?]. The 1861 census reveals that "Margarett R Ellerton" (aged 62, head, occupation of "house property") was living at 49 Chepstow Place, Kensington St Mary Abbott, Middlesex - along with her sister Isabella A M Keith and two servants.
The 1871 Census showed widowed "Margaretta" living with her daughter Margaret, granddaughter Elizabeth Denning (aged 22), and a servant at 1 Aldridge Road Villas, Paddington, London. Her son John and his family were living at 3 Aldridge Road Villas.
His wife's Probate showed: "Margaret Rebecca Ellerton of 1 Aldridge-road Villas, Westbourne Park, Middx. Widow, died at Dover, Kent on 28/9/1875. Will proved by Margaret Catherine Ellerton of 1 Aldridge Road (spinster and daughter) and William Essex. Effects <£800" - GRO Index Q3 for Dover.
Brief details of his children:
George Mouat Keith - see his own page.
Frederick Charles Grant - see his own page
Margaret Catherine - born in India 7/1/1822, Baptised on 12/2/1822. At the 1851 census she and her brother John were recorded as visitors living at 46 Pembridge Villas, Kensington, Middlesex, where the head was Eliza Kipling (annuitant, aged 61, born East Indies). In 1861 she was shown as an annuitant living with her sister Mrs Elizabeth Denning in Holy Cross, Shropshire (see below). She was living in Paddington with her mother at the time of the 1871 Census. When her mother's Will was proved in October 1875 she was living at 1 Aldridge Road, Middlesex, the address at which her mother lived. In 1881 she was recorded as unmarried, born in Bengal/East Indies, living with her unmarried aunts Isabella and Mary M [Mouat?] Keith - the latter listed as a "lunatic" - at 3 Park Street, Charlton, Kent. The 1901 Census for Hammersmith, London, showed her as "living on own means". Her Probate states "...of 30 Portland Place, Leamington Spa. Spinster, died 5/3/1910. Probate to James Edward de Winton Denning (gentleman) [son of her sister Elizabeth] and John Alexander Ellerton (solicitor) [her nephew]. Effects £442."
Elizabeth Mary - born on 5/11/1824 (at the house of her grandfather, Sir George M Keith, in Camberwell - per The Times) and Baptised on 20/1/1825 at St.Giles, Camberwell (per the Jackson Diary - the author of which was Elizabeth's godmother). The Bristol Mercury reported her marriage to "the Rev. James Denning of Brecon" (1814-1875) on 7/8/1845 at Kensington, and had 7 sons and 4 daughters. At the time of the 1861 Census they were shown living with their family at 3 Holywell Terrace, Holy Cross, Shropshire. The 1881 Census for Wingate Road, Middlesex showed her as a widow (56, b. Camberwell, Annuitant) living with three of her sons. Her obituary in The Times showed that she died on 21st May 1885, widow of Rev. James Denning, late of Shrewsbury, aged 60. Interestingly an Elizabeth Mary Ellerton married a cousin[?] James Ellerton in 1889 (GRO Index Q2, W.Ham).
Georgianna Hannah - both the Jackson Diary and East India Register show her birth as 29/12/1826, and the Diary also records that "Georgianna Hannah Ellerton infant died 1827, 20th April". She was buried on 26/4/1827 at Dinapore (per British Library, India Office FHS). The 1857 Letter confirms that "Georgina" died in infancy, while the East India Register shows the [burial] date as 26th April.

Note: Two Ellerton individuals listed in the 1901 Census as born in India have not yet been "matched up" with any of the above:
