The 1841 Census showed him living at Toxteth Park (Lancs) with his wife Mary, son William (3) and Elizabeth (1). In 1851 they were enumerated at Poulton cum Seacombe (Cheshire) with their children Elizabeth, Mary, Alice and Jane. Their son William (12) was possibly the one shown as a school pupil at Bramham, Yks.
At the time of the 1861 Census William was living
at 28 Clifton Park, Birkenhead with his wife and daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Jane
and Emily. At this time his daughter Alice was shown as a "pupil" at Eccleshall,
Staffs. but there is no trace of his youngest daughter Sarah.
In 1871 he was living at 42 Chermit Grove, Tranmere, with his wife (b.
Tarbock] and daughters Jane and Sarah. The 1881 Census showed
William living with his wife at Victoria Mount, Oxton, Cheshire.
The GRO Index for Birkenhead show that William died in 1886/Q1 and "Mary Ann Ellerton, aged 77" in 1892/Q1. Both William and Mary appear to have died intestate.
Details of their children:
Margaret Hesketh - chr.15/10/1837 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI, and GRO Index Q4). Probably died young, as there is no sign of her in the 1841 census.
William - chr.18/1/1838 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). Possibly shown as a school pupil at Bramham, Yks. at the time of the 1851 census. The Manchester Times reported his death on 9/11/1860 "aged 23 yrs, in Clifton Crescent, Birkenhead, Mr William Ellerton jnr".
Elizabeth - chr.28/11/1839 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). Possibly died young (FRC Deaths Index shows an Elizabeth in 1842/Q1, Liverpool) - although there is also a record of an Elizabeth Ellerton marrying at Wirral in 1867/Q4.
Mary - chr.30/3/1843 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). She married Edward Law on 1/7/1862 at Birkenhead (per Liverpool Mercury), and at the time of the 1881 Census they were living at "Lake Place", Hoose, Cheshire. Mary died a widow on 7/05/1927, and was buried at Rhos on Sea, North Wales - her sister Emily was buried later in the same grave.
Alice - born in 1846 (GRO Index, Q2, W Derby/Liverpool). Baptised on 8th April 1846 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). Shown as a "pupil" at Eccleshall, Staffs in 1861. A notice in the Liverpool Mercury announced the 12/1/1867 marriage "at the British Consulate, Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentine Republic, Robert, second son of the late Mr James Stewart, merchant of Habia, to Alice, third [living] daughter of Mr William Ellerton of this town".
Jane - born in 1849 (Wallesey, per Cheshire BMD website), and chr.on 7/2/1849 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). The 1851 census shows her birthplace as Seacombe (Cheshire). She married her first cousin James Ellerton on 29/12/1873 at Birkenhead (per Liverpool Mercury), and subsequently emigrated to Japan.
Emily - born in 1851 (Wallesey, per Cheshire BMD website - although the GRO Index shows an Emily born in Wirral, 1852/Q2, perhaps due to a delay in registration?). Chr.6/2/1852 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). Living with a brother/sister-in-law in Tranmere at the time of the 1871 census. Married her cousin Henry John Hickie (1852-1910) on 17th May 1877 at Birkenhead (Liverpool Mercury and GRO Index Q2). They had 6 children: William Henry (b.31/5/1878), Ernest (b.7/8/1888 - grandfather of researcher/contributor Keith Hickie), and 4 daughters. She died on 27/10/1935, and was buried at Rhos on Sea, North Wales - in the same grave as her sister Mary.
Sarah - born in 1854 (Birkenhead, per Cheshire BMD website). Chr.12/4/1855 at Saint Peter, Liverpool (IGI). She was recorded at the 1881 Census living with her widowed aunt Ellen P.Ellerton and two cousins at Tattenhall, Cheshire. Sarah married her cousin Ellerton Arthur Hickie (whose brother Henry married Emily Ellerton, above), controversially at the time, as the Hickie family were Roman Catholic, and he had to leave the faith to marry. They moved to Portugal, and had children Norah Violet (1887-1896) and Douglas.
