The births of James' first four children were registered in the St. Pancras district between 1845 and 1850, but (based on the registration of their daughter Marian's death) by 1855 the family had moved to Hampstead. At the time of the 1861 Census James was recorded living at 12 Upper Park Road, Hampstead. A female domestic servant was living in the household, but Charlotte and their children were in Brighton {30 Black Lion Street) on census night, possibly on a seaside holiday.
The 1871 Census recorded James, his wife, two of their children (Charlotte and Alfred) and two domestic servants living at 24 Upper Park Road, Hampstead.
The 1877 will of childless Daniel Woodhead left his entire estate worth c£4,000 to the daughters - presumably one from her first marriage - of his niece "Charlotte Ellerton [neé Charlotte Elizabeth Porter - born in London 1813] the wife of James Ellerton of 24 Upper Park Road London". A July 1879 codicil to the will noted that Charlotte had died [on 18th July 1877 "at Stanley-gardens, Belsize Park (Hampstead?), aged 63" per The Pall Mall Gazette] and confirmed that the bequest would go to her children. [My thanks to researcher Michael Flynn for this and other related information on the Porter family]
At the 1881 Census James was shown as "boarder, 67, widow" at 234 Richmond Road, Middlesex (head: Mary Fahmery). A notice in the Liverpool Mercury announced the death "on March 10 [1884], at 25 Russell-square, London, aged 69 years, James Ellerton". There is no trace of James in the 1891 census, supporting the possibility that the above notice referred to him. He died intestate.
James' first four children were born in Camden Town (St. Pancras registration district). Other details:
James - see his own page.
Joseph - married his cousin Elizabeth Hickie, and subsequently emigrated to Portugal. Their children were Beatrice (married Mr.Barlow; 5 children) [great-grandmother of researcher Piers Wood], Ethel, Godfrey, Mabel (m. Antonio Gonde; 3 children), May (m. Mr. Byron of Berkhampsted), Hubert (moved to Argentina?), Edward (murdered while in Africa?), and Evelyn (m. a Danish Count?; 1 daughter).
Charlotte - Born in 1848? She was still living with her parents in Hampstead in 1871. The 1881 Census included "Charlotte Elliston, visitor, unmarried, 31, b. Middlesex" living at 2 Palgrave Place, Middlesex - Mrs.Charlotte Utting, wife of the head of the household, was the niece of Charlotte Elizabeth Porter (see above). The IGI shows her christening date as 3/12/1869 at St.Clement Danes, Westminster, London - when she was aged around 19 (the IGI also shows her birthdate - incorrectly - as 30/9/1868). Her Probate states: "Charlotte Ellerton of Osbourne House, 13 The Common, Ealing, Middlesex, died on 6/1/1934 [aged 85 per the GRO Index] at 11 Croffield Road, Ealing. Probate to Guy Russell Ellerton publicity manager and Ernest Gordon Borrett Taylor solicitor. Effects £1,725".
Frank - born in 1850 (GRO Index for St.Pancras, Q1) and died several months later (1850/Q3).
Alfred - see his own page.
Marian - Died in infancy* (GRO Index of deaths 1855/Q1 for Hampstead)
* per the 1857 Letter. Researcher Michael Flynn has since found that Charlotte married John Collinge Leadbeatter (b.1809), a local surgeon, in Huddersfield in 1833. John died in 1834, aged just 24.
