John Edward ELLERTON

John was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1847 (per The Times).

In the 1861 census for Aberford show John and Elizabeth living in Main Street, Aberford with a "house servant" - in the house next to his uncle John Ellerton (who was also a GP/surgeon). They were still there in 1871 - now with two servants - while his widowed aunt Jane lived two doors away.

A notice in the 4th April 1879 edition of the London Gazette reported "The partnership subsisting between John Edward Ellerton of Aberford, and Sydney Griesbach of Garforth, carrying on the profession and practice of Surgeons, Apothecaries and Accoucheurs at Aberford and Garforth is dissolved by mutual consent".

Kelly's Directory of 1881 showed him as a surgeon in Aberford. The 1881 census for Field Lane, Aberford, shows "John E. Ellerton, 56, born at Park House, Parlington" with his wife Elizabeth "56, born in Leeds" and two female servants. They were still living in Aberford at the time of the 1891 census

His 1893 Probate shows "John Edward Ellerton of Aberford, Yks. Surgeon, died 30/5/1893. Probate on 3rd July to Elizabeth Ellerton (widow), David Bartle and John Clapham Bartle (auctioneers and valuers). Effects £11,444".

The 1901 Census shows Elizabeth living at Sydenham House, Aberford, along with two servants. The inscription on her gravestone (see below) shows that she was born on 15/9/1824 and died on 21/6/1903.

I am grateful to researcher Keith Hickie who provided this photograph of the gravestone of John and Elizabeth at Aberford churchyard - click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized image. Keith has also advised that John's birthplace still exists but is now known as "Park House Farmhouse" - if you have a picture (old or new) please let me know! NOTE: John was probably the recipient of the "1857 letter" from his uncle Edward Ellerton.
