George ELLERTON

George was married in 1797 to Ann Stocks "both of Kippax. Licence. Thos Heron, surrogate. Witnesses Ben. Stocks and Maria Stocks". Baine's 1822 Directory of West Riding includes "Ellerton, George (surgeon)" at Kippax. His sons John, George and Joseph were also to follow in his footsteps and become surgeons.

A notice of Ann's death on 1st February 1841 appeared in the Hull Packet.  The June 1841 census showed George living in Church Lane, Kippax with his son George junior, three servants, and a surgeon's apprentice.

George's death ("aged 72") was reported in the Leeds Mercury. The PCC indexes for 1845 shows "Intestate, Revd. George Ellerton; Administrator: John Ellerton, Abberford"

Brief details of George's children, all baptised at Kippax, N.Yks. (per the IGI):

Elizabeth - baptised 12/10/1797. Married John Falshaw Pawson, a London silk merchant, on 18/11/1828 at Kippax (IGI). Their children included Margaret Ellerton Pawson (who m. Charles Brown in 1852, per The Times and The Guardian); John Ellerton Pawson (an executor of several of her brothers' wills); Edward Ellerton Pawson (The Times memoriam notice in 1896: "died 21st August, 1893"; Daily News: "... youngest son of JFP, of St Paul's Churchyard, an Mill Hill, Hendon, aged 56").  The Leeds Mercury reported that "Mrs Pawson of Myddleton Square, London, eldest daughter of Mr Ellerton, surgeon of Kippax" died on 30/12/1838Her widowed husband married her sister Sarah two years later.

Ann - baptised  25/2/1802 and buried on 15/2/1803 (both shown as "daughter of Mr Geo. Ellerton, Kippax" in the PR's).

Benjamin Stocks - baptised 9/3/1803. Married Elizabeth Scath on 22/9/1833 at Sculcoates (IGI). No trace of them in the 1841, 1851 or 1861 Censuses.

Ann - baptised  29/6/1805 (shown as "daughter of Mr Geo. Ellerton, Kippax" in the PR's).

George - baptised  9/2/1807. The 1861 census for Kippax included "George Ellerton, 54, head, unattached, MRCS LSA General Practitioner" living with 3 servants. White's 1870 Directory of Leeds included "George Ellerton, surgeon" at Kippax. The 1881 census for Kippax shows him as "U, 74, Kippax, Surgeon but not practising", and the 1881 Kelly's Directory showed him as a surgeon at Duffield House ["a compact mansion of native stone, with dressings, from the parapet in front of this residence a very extensive view is obtained"] in Kippax.  He died shortly afterwards [GRO Index Q3 for Tadcaster], as shown in his Probate: "George Ellerton of Kippax, surgeon, died 24/8/1881. Will proved on 10th September by John Ellerton Pawson of Wellington, Somerset (gentleman) and George Victor Ellerton (stock and share broker) - nephews. Personal Estate £3,116". A notice to his creditors appeared in the 7th Oct 1881 edition of the London Gazette.

Sarah - baptised 18/4/1813. Married John Falshaw Pawson (husband of her late sister Elizabeth) on 30/1/1841, at St. Ricarius, Aberford (IGI, VRI, and GRO Indexes). JFP died in 1877.

Edward - baptised 30/10/1815. Both the Pigot's Directory of 1841 and Slater's in 1855 include an "Edward Ellerton, Church Garforth" (c. 4 miles from Aberford) under the heading of "Gentry & Clergy". White's 1870 Directory of Leeds described an "E. Ellerton, Esq." as one of the three "chief owners of the soil" at Kippax. In 1871 he was enumerated as a "boarder, general merchant" at Oxford Villa, Chiswick. A notice in the London Gazette on 27th November 1874 announced that "the Partnership which has for some time past been carried on by John Falshaw Pawson, Edward Ellerton, John Ellerton Pawson, Thomas Walter Newman, and James Ellerton, under the firm of J. F. Pawson and Company at No. 9 Saint Paul's Church-yard, in the city of London, in the trade or business of Warehousemen was dissolved by mutual consent". The 1881 census for Marmion Road, Battersea, Surrey showed "Edward Ellerton, U, 65, Kippax, boarder, retired warehouseman". His Probate stated: "... of 41 Marmion Road, Lavender Hill, Surrey. Gentleman, died 8/4/1893. Probate to John Ellerton Pawson (gentleman) and Montague Pawson (chartered accountant). Effects £9,475 - resworn in November 1894 at £11,238" - GRO Index Q2 for Wandsworth. The Times reported his death "at Clapham ... late of 9 St. Paul's Churchyard, E.C." and an auction announcement for the sale of books from his library, along with those of J E Pawson.
