Joseph ELLERTON

Joseph was "agent to Richard Oliver Gascoigne, the local squire and colliery owner" (per Baines 1822 Directory for Aberford) - recorded as "Land Agent" on the marriage certificate of his daughter Elizabeth.  He died intestate, and his wife was named as the administrator (Exch. & Prerog, York, 1829).

The 1830 Leeds Directory (after Joseph's early demise) lists a "Mrs Elizabeth Ellerton, Parlington Park, Aberford" - the birthplace of their youngest son in 1824. Elizabeth, and perhaps some of her children, appear to have moved to Richmond some time later.

The Leeds Mercury reported the death "at Lisbon, Elizabeth, relict of Mr J Ellerton of Park House, Parlington, near Leeds", and the inscription on the family vault at St.George's Anglican Church Cemetery in Lisbon reads: "Elizabeth Ellerton, late of Richmond, Yorkshire died on 28th November 1851, aged 69".

Brief details of Joseph's children (all baptised at Aberford, near Leeds):

The Times reported in 1853 that a "Mr.Ellerton" attended the procession at the funeral of the Queen of Portugal in Lisbon, and in 1863 was the treasurer of the Lancashire and Cheshire Operatives Relief Fund. His 1888 Probate shows "Joseph Ellerton of 13 Sutherland Avenue, St.Peter's Park, Harrow Road, Middx., died 25/4/1888. Moved to Liverpool and married Ellen Pembrey-Marsh (d. of Thomas Marsh, officer of H M Customs), at Wavertree on 9th September 1852 (Liverpool Mercury). Died in 1856?  Morris's 1874 Directory of Cheshire included "Mrs Ellen Ellerton, boarding and day school for young ladies, Church Bank, Tattenhall". The 1881 Census shows Ellen as a widow (55, b. Faversham/Kent, Schoolmistress), living at Church Bank, Tattenhall, with daughters Ellen E. (28, Teacher) and Mary G. (25, Teacher of Music), "visitor" [niece] Sarah Ellerton, a boarder, and a servant. Her Probate shows "Ellen Pembrey Ellerton of Tattenhall, Chester. The 1901 Census shows the two daughters (both listed as being born in Wavertree, Lancs.) still resident at Tattenhall - "Living On Own Means" and an "Organist" respectively.
