Edward ELLERTON

It would appear that Edward lived in London for some time, as according to a plaque in the church at Sherburn (see below) his first wife Elizabeth died and was buried at St Pancras in 1833.

However at the time of the 1841 census Edward was living in Garforth with Catharine Cundall (aged "65"), Margaret Teale (his daughter; "25") and 3 servants. In 1851 he was still living in Garforth, now with his second wife Mary and 3 servants; and again in 1861 alone with 3 servants.

Edward drew up his Will on 2/2/1848, and in it he names his wife Mary and his daughter Margaret (the wife of William Henry Teale). His nephew John Ellerton, surgeon of Aberford, and friend Edward John Teale, gentleman of Leeds, solicitor, were appointed as his trustees. Two codicils were added - the first on 1/1/1854 replacing E J Teale (who had recently died) with William Henry Teale, a clerk of Royston; and the second on 11/1/1865 witnessed by J Greenwood Teale and Edward's servant Robert Rimington.  [My thanks to Casper Verney for providing the above information]

According to a notice in The Times on 5/2/1868 "Edward Ellerton, Esq. died on the 3rd inst at Garforth, near Leeds, in his 89th year", and the Liverpool Mercury added "...formerly of Lisbon". His Probate read: "Edward Ellerton of Garforth, Yks, died 3/2/1868. Will proved at Wakefield by Rev. William Henry Teale, of The Rectory, Devizes, Wilts. Effects <£30,000".

Edward was buried at All Saints Church, Sherburn In Elmet, and his second wife Mary was buried with him.

Inside the church is a plaque on the wall dedicated to:
"Elizabeth, wife of  Edward Ellerton Esquire who departed this life on November 4th 1833 in London, aged 55 years, and whose remains were deposited in the Parish church of St Pancras.  Also to the memory of the above named Edward Ellerton who departed this life on the 3rd February 1868 in Garforth".
