Registration of births, marriages and deaths (BMD) in England began in July 1837, the
year that Queen Victoria ascended to the throne. However, prior to 1875 there was
no penalty for non-registration, so the earlier indexes are by no means complete.
The GRO Indexes for Births include the
mother's maiden name from 1911/Q3. In the case of marriages the
"Free BMD"
site enables a link to be made to
the spouse, but up to 4 couples are shown
for each registration reference (so additional research may be required before making a
"match"!) - although the spouse's name
is included in the Indexes from 1912/Q1. The index of deaths
usually includes the age of each individual after 1866, so that an approximate year of
birth can be established - the birthdate (not age) is shown
from 1969/Q2. I have indicated in the PDF files below
where there is a relevant probate or admons.
Other BMD websites covering specific counties/towns in England - including Yorkshire, Cheshire and Middlesbrough - are also available. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site lists 20 Ellertons who died in the First and Second World Wars, and brief details of these individuals are listed (see link below) for easy reference.
I have attempted over the past few years to accumulate all registered BMD's from 1837 onwards and links to the files are shown below (* denotes that data for some quarters are, at this point in time, incomplete):
