Catherine married Daniel Fossick Alderson of Kirby Wiske
in 1823. The ceremony was carried out by James Tate (perpetual curate of
Downholme and headmaster of Richmond Grammar School) and witnesses were John
Hutton of Marske, her sister Mary Ellerton, James Hutchinson and George Ripley
(a nephew of Matthew Ellerton of Stainton who died 13/11/1826).
Daniel's grandparents farmed at Appleton Wiske and a number of Aldersons are
buried in the churchyard. Catherine died in childbirth in 1834,
and Daniel ("of Marsh House" per the table tomb at Downholme) and the children moved to nearby Great Smeaton in 1840/1841.
Daniel remarried (name unknown) and had three more children: Anna Maria, Robert
and George. He was still living in Great Smeaton when he died in 1860.
It seems likely that when Catherine's uncle
Edward died in 1851 he left the property to her sons, as her
brother Richard had not married.
When Richard (the last Ellerton to live at Ellerton Lodge) died in
1873 some
of the furniture was passed down to the Alderson family.
Details of their children:
Mary Ann Alderson - born 1/4/1824 and baptised at Kirby Wiske. Bequested household effects in the will of her uncle Richard.
Daniel Fossick Alderson - born 17/9/1825 and baptised at Thornton Watlass. Married Martha, and had children Donald Fossick, Ellerton Garside (who became a Reverand: vicar at Hartford, Hunts.), Eveline Maude (died 1945), and Rosie - none of whom had children themselves.
Catherine Alderson - born 3/4/1827 and baptised at Thornton Watlass. Married a Mr Gibbes. She was bequested household effects in the 1873 will of her uncle Richard.
Elizabeth Alderson - see photograph. Born 10/12/1828 and and baptised at Thornton Watlass. She married a Mr Reed. Bequested household effects in the will of her uncle Richard. Click here #1 and #2 for two photos of her daughter Alice Ann Reed-Edmundson (1862-1930; Judith's grandmother). Died in 1901.
Jane Alderson - Elizabeth's twin. Born 10/12/1828
and and baptised at Thornton Watlass. Died of consumption in 1852.
Thomas Fossick Alderson - born 1/12/1830. He often stayed at Ellerton Lodge, and was there at the time of
the 1851 census where he was described as a farmer of 113 acres. Owned Marsh
House, a farm near Acklam, Cleveland. He emigrated to New Zealand after
his father's death in 1860.
Martha Alderson - born 5/12/1834 and baptised the following day. Possibly
died soon afterwards (her mother having already died?)
