Richard was a butter and bacon factor. He also owned farms at Downholme and Redmire and two Cattlegates at Preston Pasture. He married Catherine Whitelock in 1770 - referred to as "Katie" in the Downholme PR's for the baptism of their son Christopher.
He willed the house adjoining the Public House (now known as the Bolton Arms?) in Downholme to his wife Catherine plus furniture and an income for life payable from his farms. He also left "the properties at Downholme (and also the said small tenement from and after the death of my said wife) to my eldest son Edward". He willed £500 to his son Richard to be invested, the interest to be paid to Catherine (said wife) and after her death or second marriage £300 of the principle to Edward and £200 to Richard. Christopher inherited the Redmire farm with Cattlegates and the remainder of husbandry etc. at Ellerton Lodge and funds to run the farms and butter and bacon business. Richard was to be paid £1,000 by Christopher from the Redmire estate.
Catherine died on 15th October 1817 aged 77 yrs (buried on 17th October per NBI), and was buried along with Richard - click here for a picture of the five Ellerton table tombs at Downholme church, and here for the full transcriptions from the tombs.
