Edward was possibly the son of George (1625-1704; born at Stainton) and Dorothy - see George's will.
Edward was a freeholder at West Witton (4m SW of Leyburn) when he drew up his will in 1734 - the executor was his son Matthew, and it was witnessed by Edward Fothergill, Henry Hammond, and Edmund Lewis. The will was proved at Leeds in 1736, and as no mention was made of his wife he was presumably a widower at the time.
He bequethed to his "well beloved son Richard Ellerton the sum of five shillings" - Richard had probably been provided for when he was married, and was living in Downholme when his father died. However Edward had presumably fallen out with his son John (who had presumably already died) as he left John's children "one pound and a shilling each on condition that they and their mother leave the house in which they now live peacefully and hand it over to his son Matthew. If they refuse to Deliver Peaceable Possession the said legacies would be void".
