"More is missed by not looking than by not knowing" [Thomas McCrae, 1870-1935]

Search the entire site for names/places by typing the word(s) in the search box below

PicoSearch

Any Word: Just type one or more words to find any of the words. Capitalization doesn't matter, but spelling does!

All Words: Type more than one word and then select [Find ALL words] on the search page to find all of the words. Alternatively, use Booleans (see below).

Exact Phrase: You can search for exact phrases by surrounding them in double quotes (e.g. "John Ellerton"). Punctuation must be identical to the text on this site (e.g. "Ellerton, John").

Boolean Operators and Expressions:
Use + in front of each word or a quoted phrase that you require.
Use - in front of each word that you want to exclude.
Use AND, OR, NOT to form a Boolean expression - AND requires, OR allows, NOT excludes. Use double quotes to protect the words "and", "or", or "not" in a phrase.

Search Query Finds all pages with
bartholemew ellerton 'bartholemew' or 'ellerton' or both
"bartholemew ellerton" the phrase 'bartholemew ellerton'
+bartholemew +ellerton 'bartholemew' and 'ellerton'
+bartholemew -ellerton 'bartholemew' but not 'ellerton'
+"bartholemew ellerton" +australia 'bartholemew ellerton' and 'australia'
(thomas OR herbert) AND NOT staffordshire 'thomas' or 'herbert', and without 'staffordshire'

The ranked results will come from a total match on the words and phrases you use. PicoSearch will retrieve the best documents that match the query by weighing all of the results. If all of the search words are found in a document, that document will be weighted appropriately higher than a document which contains only a couple of those words.
