Tree Graphic   Stainton Manor Court Rolls   Tree Graphic

M.Y.Ashcroft's "The records of a manor: The population of Stainton (by Downholme) in the middle of the 17th century" provides an excellent summary of names recorded in the Stainton manor court rolls for 1653 to 1672

The Census records show that the population of Stainton in the 19th century varied between 25 and 54 (in 1971 it was just 18), but for the period prior to 1801 there were of course no census returns. However, the "manor court rolls" for 1653-1672 indicate that the population was far higher than this - the total roll varied from 26-40 which excluded wives, children, and "less substantial inhabitants" : indicating that the total population was probably around 100 during this period.

Five Ellerton names were included in the rolls (shown below with an indication of their "category", abbreviated as follows: T = tenant, J = juror, R = resiant, ST = subtenant, US = undersettle, UT = undertenant),

Bartholemew - shown in every roll from May 1653-Oct.1672 (T and J)
Edward - shown in every roll from Oct.1665-Oct.1672 (T and J).
- In
Oct.1665 he was "admitted tenant for Tho. Pearson farm"
George - shown in rolls for Oct.1671 (J) and Oct.1672 (ST)
John - shown in every roll from May 1653-Oct. 1672 (R, J, UT, US, T).
- In
April 1662 he was "admitted vice William Loftus" (with the latter's name crossed out).
John - shown in roll for Oct.1668 "infant admitted tenant" (T)

Four of the above individuals appear to "tie in" with my own Ellerton ancestry, and in such a small community it seems likely that the fifth, George, is from the same family.
