A Forest of Ellerton Trees

"Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground" (author
unknown)
My own
"John of Stainton" tree:
- John (1630?-1701?) - my earliest
"proved" ancestor, probably born in Stainton, NRY.
- Edward (1735-1802) - my direct line, and a great-grandchild
of John, above.
- Thomas (1856-1927) -
a great-grandson of
Edward, above, he emigrated
to Australia and started his own "branch" of the tree
in NSW - and probably responsible for over 50% of today's Ellerton population
in Australia!
- George (1739-1816?) - a great-grandchild of John,
above, and the line of
researchers Nigel and Tim. Early
roots were in Bellerby and Sherburn, but
several descendants migrated to
India, Portugal, Canada and Japan.
The "Matthew of Hudswell" tree:
-
Matthew (1744?-1824)
- the line of Diane, Hallie,
Sophie, Peter, David, Dirk, Don, Sue
and Linda.
-
Christopher (1813?-1883) - a grandson of Matthew
above, and an ancestor of Hallie.
-
Joseph (1826-1908) - another grandson of Matthew, and the direct line of Peter
and Dirk.
The "Matthew of Scotton" tree:
-
Matthew (1696-1739?) - born in Downholme before
moving to nearby Scotton, he is probably the ancestor of the following two Christophers ... (currently under review)
-
Christopher (1725-1770?)
- described as "son of Mathew Ellerton of Scotton" in the Hipswell PR's
-
Christopher (1810-1882) -
named after both his father and grandfather (above). Tom's line,
whose closest ancestors were born in Durham.
Also the tree of John Ellerton,
formerly of Colburn, who I would like to contact again!
Other "Yorkshire-origin" trees:
- Edward (c1650-1734) -
died in West Witton, and father of Richard below.
- Richard (1678-1743) -
born and died in Downholme, the same "patch" as my own
tree, but as yet no direct connection has been found between the two lines. His line included Rev. Edward
(1771-1851), the joint founder of the "Pusey-Ellerton scholarships".
The male line of Ellertons ended on the death of Richard (1813-1873) who
did not marry.
- Francis (16xx-1742?) -
grandfather of Francis, below.
- Francis (1712-1800) - the line of John,
Ann and Lynn and notable for the number of males named Francis or
Frank. Early roots were in Bedale, Burneston,
and Kirklington (all NRY), but several
descendants moved to Tiverton (Devon)
circa 1830.
- Benjamin (born circa 1730) -
his family (he had at least 15 children from two marriages) lived in the
Cottingham area for many years. His line included Charles who migrated
to Canada and had the town Hallerton (sic) named after him.
- Christopher of Grinton
(1725?-1779) - notable for the "migration" of his grandson James (1783-1851)
from Yorkshire to Burnley, Lancashire circa 1815.
Other Ellerton trees:
-
George (1714-1760) -
born in Kendal. He was the great grandfather of John (1826-1893), the
famous hymn-writer.
-
Richard "of Adderley,
Shropshire" (b. circa 1750) - the father of John below.
-
John (1772?-1846) - son of
Richard, above. He was probably
born in Staffordshire, as were his children and grandchildren. This is the
direct line of Kim
and Josephine.
- William (b.1833) -
Staffordshire roots?
