This
Matthew was one of six illegitimate children of
Elizabeth Ellerton, who was herself the illegitimate daughter of
Matthew
Ellerton, but brought up by her uncle Christopher in Scotton. It seems likely that he was born in 1744, as at the time of
his burial he was shown as being aged 80. He was baptised in January 1748 -
possibly along with his younger brother who died shortly afterwards - and married Hannah Petty, the illegitimate daughter of Dorathy Petty (who later married Thomas Burrel when Hannah was 10 years old -
causing some confusion to researchers, as the latter was often referred to as Hannah Burrel
by parish clerks).
