Buildwas Leisure Motoduro Championship Round 4 The penultimate round of the Buildwas Leisure Motoduro Championship took place last Sunday 21st August 2005 at Buildwas near Ironbridge in Shropshire. Once again many new faces were present as the popularity of the BWL events continue to grow. The event even attracted WEC rider Paul Whibley for a bit of a blast around the Ironbridge circuit, on his Gas Gas EC250. The format for the day was for each class to have two one hour races, Novice and Veterans off for the first race then Experts and Clubmen an hour later then the format was repeated for the afternoon session. This really works well, the day seems very laid back with a good two hours riding thrown in. The weather was superb, really hot and sunny which made the track fast with very little dust to speak of. The fast, open start over the jump section led the riders into the challenging wooded area, which didn't throw up too many problems. Out of the woods the riders hit the long open straights at the far side of the track before heading into a narrow tree infested tricky section followed by a quick blast over twisty ground to the finish. Off first were the Novice and Veterans. In the Novice class, Ash Martin put on an excellent display, so good that it looks like a move to Clubmen is on the cards. Steve Moss chased hard to take second overall with Craig Reynolds close behind in third. Darral Griffiths, Tim Baker and Andy Wilson constantly swapped places but eventually finished in that order for fourth, fifth and sixth spots. The Veteran class saw quite a battle for supremacy. Keith Harding eventually took first place overall but it had been tough going in the heat for the Over 40's riders. Alan Henley followed Keith in for second place with Rich Hilbert only seconds behind in third. Gareth Lewis scored valuable points in fourth with Ian Fenwick a couple of minutes behind in fifth and Howard Staves following up in sixth place. Whibz's appearance in the Experts rattled a few people initially, but Jason Thomas picked up the gauntlet and blasted his way to first overall with some impressive riding and huge jumps for the crowds of onlookers. Lincoln Brewster hammered his way to second spot with Dave Carthy third. Whibz enjoyed the day and cruised to fourth, more of a training outing than really competitive racing, the course was significantly shorter than he was accustomed to but he put on a display for the crowd over the jumps, which seemed his favourite place to pass people. In the Clubman class the ever-present Paul McSorley once again took first overall, helping his Championship standings no end. Tristan Roberts was close behind Paul with a slight gap back to Adam Evans in third and Henry Snelson in fourth. Yet another great event from Buildwas Leisure's mastermind Justin Kendrick-Jones. He laid out an interesting and challenging course, which really made the day. From Novice to Expert, all riders felt there was something there for them. Final Championship round is on September 25th. In addition to Adult and Youth classes for Quads, event organisers extended the entry to include a junior solo class. Justin Kendrick-Jones had designed yet another exciting course to include sharp tight corners and twisty turns, tricky wooded sections, steep drops and hill climbs, long speed-bursting straight sections and a series of jumps along the way. Overnight rain ensured the track was in excellent condition with not a speck of dust in sight. After a short practice session, a full line up of Adult Quads saw the day get underway. The first hour long event, which was originally scheduled to run for 45 minutes, saw a fierce three-way battle between Darren Pyne, Darren Bridge and Mark Fowler, who was first off the starting line. The three riders had a good 30 second lead over the rest of field, with Darren Pyne stealing the win, closely followed by Darren Bridge. Bridge, who was still looking for a hat-trick having won two earlier events, battled furiously with Darren Pyne in the second race, but despite both completing 27 laps, Pyne took the win for first overall, followed by Bridge. Mark Fowler finished in third place with 26 laps. Commiserations must go to Adrian Lee who was sidelined after practice due to a 'technical hitch'. He managed to get it fixed in time for the second race and completed 13 laps to finish 9th overall. The Youth Quad and Solo riders were put together for their two 45 minute races, with solo riders starting first. Ashley Martin, riding AMCA Champion Gary Davies' ex 250 Kawasaki (owned by Charles Steley) took the holeshot, with Alec Everitt hot on his heels. Disaster struck Martin in the first race however, as he had to fix a broken chain leaving him way down the field in 6th place. Everitt stormed around the course, completing 10 laps in the first race and eight in the second to finish first overall. Martin had a flawless second race, finishing in first place, but his earlier bad luck kept him in second overall. Ben Pearson put in an impressive performance, completing 13 laps to finish third overall. A packed field of Youth Quad riders saw some competitive racing. Jason Springham, riding in his first ever race, stormed around the course to finish fourth overall, completing 16 laps, as did Carl Jones who came in third. Lawrence Roberts and Ryan Griffiths battled it out, with Roberts finishing the day in second place and Griffiths taking the well deserved top spot with an impressive 19 laps.
