It had to happen, it did happen.
City lost in the FA Cup to a non-league team. The game was played
in fits and starts: City started playing and we had fits. This
means that in the two years since the defeat at Hayes the team
has gone nowhere.
Despite having the suppor of the board and fans alike, no debts
and the OK to bring in the players he wanted, Eddie May has blown
it. It's no surprise that supporters are getting fed up (again).
The ironic chanting of "Eddie, Eddie, what's the score?"
during the Bath game showed that they also felt let down (again).
Rick Wright promised us: 'A team they've never seen in this division,
we'll set point scoring records, goalsconng records and we'll
lead from day one."
Bullshit but the kind of talk you like to hear from the man in
charge. So where is this team?
City played two men over 35 against
Bath. Hardly a long term strategy. Any team with two players of
that old is going to struggle. Gibbins and James have no pace
and no stamina. James is overrated, can't pass and cannot take
a corner kick without giving it straight lo the goalkeeper. Gibbins
just refuses to retire. Perry should have been in at fullback
against Bath and Richardson or Bird should have been on the bench,
not a defender and our best striker.
The substitution of Pike for Cohen was a disaster and tactically
inept. Bath had just put on Dion Vernon and Cohen should have
been there to tackle him. Gibbins was nowhere near him It also
meant that all our attacking options were down the left.
Millar wasn't up to it and seems only to be in the team as some
kind of vendetta against Pike. Millar wasted much of Searle's
excellent approach work.
The apparent and sad fact is that in 15 months May has not built
a team good enough for promotion. Len Ashurst left May a side
three players short of promotion and that's exactly what we've
got now.
The unnecessary reliance on loan players is a big mistake. Either
May wants someone in his side or he doesn't. Either he's building
a team or he isn't Surely the reason that players ot the calibre
of Junior Bent and Gary Thomson decided against joining the Club.
May's cautious approach is wasting time. It's time for some audacious
signings - Bath's Dion Vernon would be a good one. There's still
time, but gates are ebbing and patience is wearing thin. All avoidable.
Sort it out, for Christ's sake.
