Aerial view of Montfrin

Montfrin is mid-way between Avignon and Nîmes, on the left bank of the Gardon, near the Rhône. You can see the Gardon top left (picture taken looking north) and the château on the right.

A few minutes walk up the hill from the centre of Montfrin is the château. Built in the 17th-18th centuries around a 12th century tower, it is privately occupied. From here you can see the Rhône flowing between the châteaux of Beaucaire and Tarascon a few miles south, on its way to the Camargue.

Beyond the château you can walk for miles between olive trees, orchards and vineyards. It gets hot in summer, with temperatures in the 30s (90s Fahrenheit) but you can walk down to the river to cool off.

The spectacular 49-metre high Pont du Gard - about 5 miles (8km) upstream of Montfrin - is part of a 2,000-year-old aqueduct which carried springwater from Ucetia (Roman Uzès) to Nemausus (Nîmes).
