Guest House

Torver is a peaceful hamlet two miles south of Coniston. It contains a church and two pubs which both serve meals and are within 5 minutes walking distance of Brigg House. A larger range of pubs, restaurants and shops can be found in Coniston, Hawkshead (6 miles) and Ambleside (10 miles).

For those exploring by car, all of the Lake District can easily be reached in day excursions from Torver. Locally, the drive along the eastern side of Coniston Water and the tour of the Coniston fells via the beautiful Duddon Valley and Wrynose Pass are recommended for their impressive mountain views.

Torver is well situated for many activities including walking, climbing, water sports and bird-watching. There is a riding stables in the village and mountain bikes can be hired locally. Canoes, rowing boats, dinghies and windsurfers are available for hire in Coniston. The steam yacht 'Gondola', owned by the National Trust, cruises the lake, and Coniston Launch runs a ferry service as well as special interest sailings, such as an Arthur Ransome cruise.

A footpath starts at Brigg House and leads through fields and woods to the shores of Coniston Water, about half an hour's walk away. From here you can walk to Coniston along the lakeside path, or catch the ferry boat which also calls at Brantwood, John Ruskin's home. In the other direction, footpaths lead into the hills to Coniston Old Man, Dow Crags and the Duddon Valley via Walna Scar Pass.

We know the area well and are happy to advise our guests on walks, tours and local events.
