Networking and Train the Trainer courses

We are striving to provide training and employment opportunities for people recovering from severe mental illness, a group who are often precluded from such opportunities. We continue to build towards co-operative links with the business world, clinicians and also through our strong links with European partners in the field of mental health rehabilitation.

The Certificate in Vocational Rehabilitation, an internationally recognised ‘Train the Trainers’ course, accredited by the University of the West of England, was run by Bristol Workways and was part funded through the European Social Fund ECHo Horizon programme 1995/1997 . The course was designed for staff who are working with people who have a mental illness and wish to promote development, training and employability of the client.

Mental Health Matters South West worker-based projects:-

Whitchurch Social Enterprise, Bristol, providing therapeutic training and rehabilitation opportunities for workers in light industrial skills in a modern, ‘working industrial unit’ environment which is being developed as a Social Enterprise.

Land Based Projects, including Barrow Woods Forest Farm, a working 100 acre broad-leafed forest project, provide opportunities to train up to NVQ Levels I & II in horticulture. Workers can gain complementary experience and training in horticulture or forestry. Three Social Enterprises/Social Firms are being developed in;

 Rustic Craft Products - making rustic furniture

 Mobile gardening and horticulture

 Forest products - including charcoal and log manufacture and sales

Redcliffe Network, Redcliffe, Bristol, our latest project, having obtained funding from TSB Lloyds Bank for initial computer equipment, provides a wide variety of Training and Work opportunities in a city centre environment, including Information Technology and Administration. Like our land based projects, we offer training up to NVQ Levels I & II. Trainees have the opportunity to assist the developing Social Enterprises/Social Firm initiatives by designing and providing literature and Redcliffe Network is moving towards an emerging social firm structure itself.

Bristol Workways Limited & Spectrum Day Services (previously Phoenix NHS Trust)

Employment Horizon Funded Stage - 1998 to mid 1999 - Archive Site

The Social Firm Initiative was a joint venture between Bristol Workways Ltd and Spectrum Day Services (previously Phoenix NHS Trust). It was part funded by the European Social Fund under the Employment Horizon Strand. This European funding encompasses development work in 1997 and then operational project work through 1998 to the end of 1999.

The following summary highlights the main aims of the Social Firm Initiative, "....... we will create a management framework to pilot and establish Social Firms for adults with mental health and learning difficulties in the South West Region of the UK. The project will support and enable integration back into the labour market of the above groups through the provision of life, key and vocational skills. Training will be in real work settings based on the Social Firm model. Also, a course for staff, as Agents of Change, will be disseminated and developed. The project will add to national and transnational good practice".

The project has three main strands;
