Other
activities
In 1993 I gave advice to the College of Optometrists on the
therapeutic use of coloured filters which was later incorporated into guidance
that the College issued to the profession. Other activities with the College of
Optometrists include: contributing to continuing education syllabi in dyslexia
and binocular vision, co-author of the syllabus and Chair of the Subject Expert
Panel for the higher Diploma in Orthoptics, member of the Higher Qualifications
Exam Board, and the Working Group on Schoolchildren. I am also an examiner for
the College of Optometrists Diploma in Orthoptics.
I am author of six books, four on binocular vision anomalies
and two on vision and dyslexia. In 2002 I was appointed, and in 2010
reappointed, to the Editorial Board of the peer-reviewed journal, Ophthalmic
and Physiological Optics.
I have been involved in over 25 cases as expert witness,
including civil litigation (clinical negligence) and complaints brought before
the General Optical Council Disciplinary Committee and NHS tribunals. I have
taken instructions from solicitors (for both prosecution and defence), the
Association of Optometrists, and from PCTs.These cases have included claims
concerning orthoptics (binocular vision, strabismus, and amblyopia), paediatric
eye problems, specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, including the use of
coloured filters), and retinal detachment. I have recently supervised a three
year programme of research which determined the content of typical eye
examinations by community optometrists, which provides a unique insight into
the performance that can be expected of reasonably competent optometrists.
Although I am involved in several research studies and have
authored over 200 papers, most of my working week is spent providing routine
optometric eyecare in a community optometric practice. I have delivered over
250 invited lectures, most on continuing professional development courses for
optometrists.
I have been external examiner to six PhD candidates (Simon
Barnard, City University, 1999; Catherine Porter, Manchester University, 2005;
Ben Wright, Essex University, 2008; Penny D’Ath, City University, 2008; Dharani
Ramamurthy, Anglia Ruskin University, 2010; Marc Lambooij, Eindhoven University).
I have supervised: five PhD students to completion, all registered at City
University (Deacon Harle, 2007; Rakhee Shah, 2009; Zahra Jessa, 2009; Claire
O’Leary, 2010; Marten Fortuin, 2011), 9 MSc student projects to completion, and
am currently supervising 7 professional doctorate (Dr Optometry) students.
Only major (MSc or above) research studies are listed. In addition, I supervise several City University BSc special studies, including this year one project and three dissertations.
