Professional Background

Bruce Evans studied optometry as an undergraduate at City University and was registered as an optometrist in 1984. He attained the Diploma in Contact Lens Practice of the British College of Optometrists (C. Optom.) in 1987 and was awarded a College of Optometrists Scholarship to study Visual Factors in Dyslexia with Dr Neville Drasdo at Aston University in 1988.  He was awarded a PhD for this work in 1991 and gained Fellowship of the College of Optometrists in 1996.

 

In 1991 Dr Evans was appointed as Research Fellow, in 1993 as Senior Lecturer, and in 1998 as Director of Research at the Institute of Optometry in London. Dr Evans has held posts as visiting lecturer in orthoptics to Aston University, visiting lecturer to the City University, and he is an examiner for the C. Optom. In 2001 he was appointed as Visiting Professor to City University, Department of Optometry and Visual Science. Professor Evans’ main areas of research are visual factors in dyslexia and orthoptics. He has lectured and published extensively and his first book, Pickwell’s Binocular Vision Anomalies, Third Edition, was published in 1997, with the fourth edition due out in February 2002. Another book by Professor Evans, on Dyslexia and Vision (2001, Whurr publishers), is aimed at members of the public, teachers, and eyecare professionals and has been met with critical acclaim. Research

Professor Evans is Director of Research at the Institute of Optometry in London. His main research interests relate to binocular vision (orthoptics), specific learning difficulties (dyslexia), and children’s vision. Professor Evans is an Associate Editor of Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics, the Journal of the College of Optometrists.
