Foxton Locks

Foxton Locks

by Geoffrey R. Herickx

Thousands of visitors each year visit this fascinating place to see the flight of locks which are still used, and the site of the former Inclined Plane.  Work commenced on the building of the locks in 1810 and took almost four years to complete.  The locks were the last link to be completed in the construction of the Grand Union Canal that linked London with the East Midlands coalfields.  Between 1814 and the 1840's the canal was extensively used but trade diminished later in the century, making it all the more surprising that the famous Inclined Plane was built at the turn of the century as an alternative, faster means of raising and lowering canal boats.  The Inclined Plane had a very short life and ceased to be used in 1911.  The locks, which had deteriorated, were renovated and are now used extensively by pleasure boats.  They are one of the best-known and popular landmarks in Leicestershire.
